“A Midwinter Night’s Dream” at the AZ Gallery

The AZ gallery is showing oils, photography, jewelry and prints by local women artists. Some standouts include Emily Gray Koehler’s color-reduction woodcuts; Lindsy Halleckson’s oils; and Megan Moore’s giclée prints.

Emily Gray Koehler uses crisp colors, and organic shapes and lines for her woodcuts. She has an eye for design and composition, giving her work an abstract quality while never leaving the realm of representation. In “Remnants of the Harvest” Koehler combines soft colors with strong horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines to produce a dynamic woodcut of a very ordinary subject. 

Lindsy Halleckson uses pure form and color to produce quiet abstract paintings. These paintings are made to contemplate, not simply observe. Stand before “Silent Search, No. 1” long enough, and you will feel a sense of calm and relaxation. Halleckson’s statement reveals her intent: “I convey nature’s silence and peace with my paintings.”

The giclée prints by Megan Moore, made from her original oils, are an explosion of color, pattern and form. Moore states that her art is influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement and Art Nouveau. This is evident in “Coy Pond,” with its curved and patterned tree branches, and its overall rich color and flat picture plane. In “Fish Tank,” Moore again relies on a balance of colors and organic forms to achieve a simple, yet interesting composition.

The show runs through February 26.

This Saturday, “A Midwinter Night’s Dream” opens at the AZ Gallery. The show features a group of Minnesota women artists including jewelry designer Jennifer Merchant, who was last seen at the Walker’s Jewelry Mart; designer/mixed-media artist Christy Johnson of redshoes26 design; and Karoline Wells of the Elixery, whose vegan and cruelty-free beauty products were highlighted inMinnesota Monthly‘s 2011 Best of the Cities issue. You may find yourself familiar with the works of some of these talents, as many have previously shown at the AZ Gallery, Lowertown’s biannual art crawls, and the Lowertown Art Show. A respite from these dark nights, “Midwinter” promises to bring even more unstoppable creative energy to anyone interested in local arts. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the exhibition’s opening reception, which is from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, February 11, is also a shopping event featuring locally made art, jewelry, home products, artisan chocolate, and baked goods all for sale. Exerpt…  “Also on Friday, the AZ Gallery (308 Prince St., No. 130) is hosting its inaugural Lowertown Art Show (5-10 p.m.) in the gallery and at the Black Dog Cafe (308 Prince St., No. 100). Showcasing 50 artists and more than 80 pieces of artwork, including paintings, mosaics, sculpture, glass works and photography, the show continues through Jan. 15. A reception will be held Dec. 10 (7-10 p.m.) at the gallery, where awards will be presented in categories judged by George Robinson, a former Bethel University art professor. A People’s Choice award will be voted on by the public, and door prizes will be donated by St. Paul businesses.

“The original concept that we had for doing the show was that all of the other art events are studio-centered, where all of the artists end up off in their own buildings, in their own studios waiting for the public to come,” said Todd Peterson, vice president of the AZ Gallery collective. “We thought it would be neat to have an event where all the artists got to show up in one place and celebrate the uniqueness of the art community here.”

“This month, AZ Gallery and Black Dog Café and Wine Bar are teaming up to showcase work from upwards of 50 neighborhood artists in the 1st Annual Lowertown Art Show. The juried exhibition, which opened last weekend, features an eclectic assortment of some 85 works in a variety of media, all made by artists who live and/or work in Lowertown and downtown St. Paul.

Visitors will see everything from landscape photography to mixed media pieces, sculpture, drawing, painting, glass art and more. As I wandered through the show, I found a number of artists entirely new to me — like sculptor Jessie McNally, whose surreal winged horse, “Sora,” immediately drew my eye; or Matthew Rucker, whose name I scribbled down for follow-up later, after being smitten by his stylized, color-saturated painting.

There’s nothing in particular connecting one piece to another in the exhibition, no aesthetic conversation or narrative through-line among these works — but then, that’s not the point. For the viewer, it’s an intriguing but chaotic visual experience, hard to digest critically. Actually, that’s true of many group shows, now that I think about it. That’s not to say they’re not worth seeing, though — they are, if only for the thrill of discovering new talent.

Lowertown’s first annual art show is an exuberant send-up both to the individual artists and the diversity of creative vision for which this culturally rich area of the city is known.”
