“It’s Polite to Point”

A group exhibition of work from the 2012 College of Visual Arts Photography and Fine Arts

Exhibition of thesis work from emerging fine art and photography graduates of the College of Visual Arts.

The scope of the work addresses issues of human experience relating to nature, technology, and psychology, as well as value in contemporary society, pop culture,  our relationship to the natural world, memory and place. Artists are exploring a broad range of techniques, from traditional to experimental processes.

AZ Gallery and the Black Dog are neighboring spaces in the Northern Warehouse building. In both venues, there’s going to be loads of art to see (I’m particularly eager to see Alex Kuno’s new work in his “Miscreants of Tiny Town” series, currently on exhibit at the Black Dog) and live music throughout the weekend. In addition to its group exhibition — a mix of 18 artists, many of them co-op members and a few invited guest artists — AZ Gallery’s line-up of musicians to play in the gallery includes roots rock, blues and jazz with the likes of Jeff Ray and Hurricane Harold, Dave Ziffer Jazz/Fusion Guitar, Bernie King and the Guilty Pleasures and Le Boom Boom (see the full schedule here). The Black Dog, a favorite crawl hub and watering hole for both artists and gallery-hoppers, will be humming as well, with food and drink and, weather permitting, a spot on the patio from which to see and be seen; live music will include performances by Todd Harper and his Angry Birds followed by DJ BK-One on Friday night.

Woodbury Students Have Large Presence in Local Art Show

Woodbury High School had more art pieces in the 55th Les Farrington Best 100 Juried Art Exhibition than any other St. Paul area public or private school, according to the South Washington County School District.

The district says 27 works of art by Woodbury High School students were selected for the show, which makes up more than a fourth of the entries. The show was sponsored by the St. Paul Jaycees and showcased the talent of local high school artists. It was held at the AZ Gallery in St. Paul this month.

The following Woodbury students had artwork selected: Alexandra Grupe, Danny Dang (2 works), Ellen O’Connell, Emily Anderson, Erik Burt, Evan Henke, Lauren Thompson, Margaret Glime (2 works), Nadia Mamun, Nuel Pilien, Rachel Henning and Steven Rocco.

Also, Alexandra Grupe, Evan Henke, and Meghan Reilly had full portfolios selected.

As a civic organization for young people, the Saint Paul Jaycees are developing the next generation of leaders by providing opportunities to stand up and take initiative in their community. We engage young people ages 18-40 through project management and social entrepreneurship that will make an impact in their communities and build leadership skills.

Jaycees around the state are responsible for organizing hundreds of community festivals, fundraisers for other nonprofits, and creating opportunities for community members to engage with one another. Our Mission is to provide the opportunity for young individuals to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change.
